steve barnard Steve Barnard was born in Nottingham and studied percussion at the Royal Academy of Music with James Blades and Nicholas Cole. After working as a freelance percussionist in London for a year, he was appointed Principal Timpanist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in 1979 at the age of 21, making him one of the longest serving timpanists in the UK.

Steve taught percussion at the University of Wales, Cardiff from 1980 to 1988 and since 1998, has been teaching timpani at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he is also head of the percussion department (Percussion Co-ordinator).

 As well as fulfilling his role as timpanist of the BBC N.O.W. Steve has been involved in the orchestra’s education and community activities throughout Wales for nearly 15 years and has a CPDA diploma in recognition of this work. In 1996, he was awarded an A.R.A.M by the Royal Academy of Music for services to the profession.

Steve is also a founder member of the jazz quintet ‘NOT NOW’ in which he plays drums alongside other members of the orchestra. They perform regularly at venues in South Wales and plan to record their debut album of original compositions later this year.
