Fumito Nunoya

 Acclaimed by the Boston Herald as “agile and terrifically talented,” and by the Houston Chronicle as “magnetic… impressive,” Fumito Nunoya won First Prize at the 2005 Ima Hogg Young Artists Competition in Houston, Texas. As a result, he made his U.S. concerto debut with the Houston Symphony that year. He was also a winner at one of the most important competitions for marimbist, the 3rd World Marimba Competition, which was organized by a world-wide marimbist, Keiko Abe. Mr. Nunoya has won top prizes at many other national and international competitions including the PAS (Percussive Arts Society) International Marimba Competition in 2003, the National Young Artist Competition in Texas in 2003, and the 10th Japan Classic Music Competition in 2000.
Mr. Nunoya has presented solo recitals at the University of South Florida, Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, The Boston Conservatory, A Palazzo Magnani (Italy), Conservatoire Superieur de Paris (France), and in Yamagata, Akita (Japan). Since 2002, he has performed five showcase recitals with various musicians in his home town of Odate, Akita sponsored by the Odate Culture Center. He recently released his first CD, “Red Dragonfly,” which acclaimed as “an example of artistic music making at its’ highest level” by newsletter of The Percussive Arts Society Florida Chapter. The CD includes major marimba repertoire as well as Asian folk tunes.
An active chamber musician, Mr. Nunoya has collaborated with woodwinds, strings, singers and percussionists. He has performed marimba chamber music at The Boston Conservatory and Goethe Institute in Boston, and in Japan at Okayama Symphony Hall, Izumity Hall in Miyagi, Bunsho-kan in Yamagata, and Harmony Hall in Fukui.
Mr. Nunoya has appeared as soloist with the Houston Symphony, Eastern Connecticut Symphony (USA), Odate Wind Ensemble, the Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Odate Magewappa Japanese Drumming Group (Japan), and Di Repercussio Ensemble percussioni dell’Istituto Peri (Italy).
He has taught at the University of South Florida, Zeltsman Marimba Festival 2003, 2004 and 2006, and at Berklee College of Music.
Born in 1979 in Akita, Japan, Fumito Nunoya began playing the piano at age seven and the marimba and percussion at age seventeen. He graduated from Yamagata University with a music education degree in 2001 and received a masters degree in marimba performance at The Boston Conservatory (TBC) where he studied with Nancy Zeltsman. Mr. Nunoya received a full scholarship with an award from president of TBC and continued his studies in its distinguished Artist Diploma program, and graduated in 2006. He is the first marimba (or percussion) major in the school’s history to receive this distinction.
He has also studied with Patrick Hollenbeck, a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra; Tomoyuki Okada, timpanist and percussionist in the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan; and Nanae Mimura, a world-renowned marimba performer and alumnus of TBC.
