The 15th annual Day of Percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, will take place on Sunday, 11th February.

We've programmed artists to both entertain and educate you to the highest level in all aspects of drums and percussion. The artists appearing this year are covering marimba through to drum-kit, via the Irish bodhrán, in musical settings relevant to all.

Please see below for a full programme listing - whether you are new to the event or have been many times before, I'm sure there will be much for you to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you!

50 Years in the Life of the Bodhran
9.40am    Haden Freeman Concert Hall

Renowned German player, Rolf Wagels, leads us through the history of the bodhrán. He will demonstrate the development of different styles and techniques and the role the bodhrán plays in traditional Irish music.

Reading and Interpreting Drum Charts
11am      Bruntwood Theatre

Reading music often lets many drummers down. Dave Hassell explains his approach to interpreting charts and how to articulate 'the dots'. Along with a rhythm section, Dave will demonstrate the skills required to allow musical freedom whilst playing 'off the page'.

Four Steps to Feel Better on the Marimba
12.20pm   Haden Freeman Concert Hall

French marimba player, Eric Sammut, demonstrates through musical examples how the physical and mental approach to playing can improve our enjoyment and performance on the concert marimba.

The Brass Band Percussionist
2.20pm       Haden Freeman Concert Hall

Simone Rebello presents an insight into the role of percussion in the modern brass band from the perspective of a section player, soloist and adjudicator.

Electronics and the Drum Kit
3.40pm        Bruntwood Theatre

Andy Gangadeen, one of the UK's most popular drummers, brings his vast experience of electronic drums to show how you can incorporate electronic technology into your playing without it taking over your performance.

Sound, Stroke, Stick, Symphony
5pm            Haden Freeman Concert Hall

Ian Wright explores timpani parts from Handel to the present day, focusing on different musical styles, the varying techniques required and how this knowledge can help timpanists who are just beginning to play.

Evening Concert

7.30pm      Haden Freeman Concert Hall

Eric Sammut, together with the RNCM Percussion Ensemble plays a selection of his own solo and ensemble compositions.

Drumming Workshop

Studio Theatre

with BackBeat Percussion Quartet

An opportunity for young people to explore exciting ways to play percussion. BackBeat uses broomsticks, bins and basketballs alongside more common drums and fuses these with a blend of rhythms from around the world plus their own invented grooves. Come and play alongside them, previous musical experience useful but not essential.
