A new UK-based company specialising in quality music for percussion has been officially launched. Alto Publications aims to provide an extensive catalogue of pieces for percussion ensemble, solo percussion and other percussion-related works. A varied roster of composers has been signed up to provide the highest quality output of repertoire. These include Chris Stock, principal percussionist of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, whose works in the catalogue include Amber Samba for percussion sextet and Aquila, an outstanding piece for eleven-piece percussion ensemble. Legendary jazz vibraphone artist Anthony Kerr is writing ‘The Magic Mallets Series’, a set of duets for marimba and vibraphone. David Powell, head of percussion for Gwent Music Support Service, has been writing pieces for the county percussion ensembles over the last few years and these will gradually be added to the catalogue including enSnared and Tom’s Foolery for percussion quintet. Other highlights in the catalogue include Jacob Wheeler’s Elam Woc for solo percussion with backing track, Gareth Wood’s Nightlife (Three Pieces for Marimba & Piano) and Reasons, a substantial percussion quartet work from Matthew Hall. Some of the other composers with works in the catalogue include Adam Davies, Ashley-John Long, Peter J, Morgan and Mike Pickering. Alto Publications is also proud to be the sole supplier of the brass band version of Ney Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba, the most popular marimba concerto of all time. This version was commissioned by EBBA for the 4th European Soloists Competition held at the Sir Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham in 2007. The brass band set for the full concerto is available as well as the final movement as a stand-alone concert-piece. Full details of the works in the catalogue as well as profiles of all of the composers are available from the new Alto Publications website: www.altopublications.com
