ev-enz Newport-based percussion hire and retail company Ev-Entz is preparing for its busiest summer yet following continued expansion over the last few years.

Ev-Entz was formed by Adrian Evans in 1997, providing stage management, stage crew and transport services to the entertainment industry. However, the introduction of an extensive percussion hire department in 2000 can be held responsible for the biggest share of business growth. This is a side to the business that provides percussion instruments at a huge range of events for every conceivable type of ensemble. For a start the company is relied upon by all of the local authority youth music services including Caerphilly, Cardiff, Gwent, RCT and West Glamorgan. Other clients range from brass bands (including Cory and Tredegar) to orchestras (including BBC NOW). The percussion hire services offered by Ev-Entz are not limited to Wales-based clients, with regular engagements in the Midlands and the South West and occasional European bookings, including a recent trip to Norway to provide percussion instruments for the European Brass Band Contest.

As more and more hire requests for guitar amplifiers and keyboards came in it seemed a natural progression to develop a backline hire department. This has led to a firmly established place as one of the UK’s busiest providers with regular clients including clubs, concert halls, music festivals and recording studios working with high profile artists including Hard-Fi, Lost Prophets, Orson and The Automatic.

This summer’s activities include the provision of backline hire for the internationally-attended HSBC Brecon Jazz, the Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend and the National Eisteddfod of Wales in Cardiff, where Ev-Entz will be the exclusive suppliers of both backline and percussion to all of the stages as well as the Maes B event. They recently provided similar services for the Urdd Eisteddfod in Conwy which featured 15,000 young competitors. Ev-Entz have also formed strong links with Music for Youth providing backline and percussion hire at their National Festival in Birmingham; the largest event of its kind in the world. 10,000 young musicians and singers perform at this annual six-day celebration of youth music. The two companies work closely together throughout the year on a number of events including the Primary Proms and the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The flourishing hire departments at Ev-Entz have provided a base for a growing retail department which originally concentrated solely on percussion but now provides general music sales. The strong music service links form a core of the customer base which includes students, teachers and professional musicians. The company has also taken on the UK distribution rights for two product lines from the United States; drum stick manufacturers Trueline and percussion mallet suppliers Mike Balter Mallets.

The continued expansion of the Ev-Entz group as a whole has caused the company to rapidly outgrow its industrial unit headquarters on Enterprise Way. This has been solved with the purchase of a 4,500 sq. ft. warehouse near Caerleon Road which will allow plenty of space for storage, offices, sound-proof demonstration rooms and an extensive retail display.
