gmf Leeds plays host to masters of percussion
 The fourth annual Percussion Summer School
 West Park Centre, Spen Lane, Leeds 30
 July – 3 August 2007

The Percussion Summer School is the only event of its kind in the UK. Combining teaching of the highest quality with an inclusive, relaxed approach, the course runs for five days during which participants aged 16 and upwards will study orchestral, jazz and world percussion and take part in percussion ensembles. The course culminates in a free concert on Friday 3 August, 1.05 pm, West Park Centre.

The event is run by the Global Music Foundation (www.globalmusicfoundation.org) and features an exceptional line-up of tutors: 

Marney O’Sullivan is one of the UK’s leading orchestral players. He was a member of in the Hallé before becoming Principal Timpanist of the Orchestra of Opera North in 1991. As guest principal with the London Philharmonic and many other orchestras he has worked with conductors such as Kurt Masur, André Previn, Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado.  He is Lecturer in Percussion at Leeds College of Music.  

Stephen Keogh, based in Barcelona, is one of Europe’s most sought-after jazz drummers. Chiefly known in the UK for his work with Peter King, Tina May and Nikki Iles, he also performs with Gilad Atzmon, Brad Mehldau and Louis Stewart amongst many others. 

Jim Hart is a sensational young talent, equally proficient on vibraphone, drums and piano.  He was the winner of the 2006 British Jazz award for 'Rising Star' and is already one of the most in-demand musicians on the London. He plays regularly with Martin Drew's New Jazz Couriers, The Matt Wates sextet, Stan Sulzmann and Gwillym Simcock. His first album as leader (“Emergence” on the Loop label 1123) was released in 2007.

Felix Gibbons lives for much of the year in São Paulo and is an expert in carnival samba and Brazilian percussion in general. He performs in the UK with the group Sirius B and has worked with Milton Nascimento and Peter Gabriel.

Jan Bradley is a member of the renowned 4-MALITY Percussion Quartet (www.4-mality.com) who have performed worldwide to great acclaim. Jan is increasingly known as a composer for percussion and is an adjudicator at the BBC Young Musician Competition.
