Percussion courses with Joby Burgess CoMA Summer School, 21-28 July 2007, Doncaster College Joby Burgess is one of Britain’s most diverse percussionists. Joby’s work spans a wealth of new music in many different styles and regular collaboration with artists such as Joanna MacGregor, John Kenny, James Wood, Stewart Copeland, Michael Finnissy, Nitin Sawhney and Sarah Leonard. Joby’s projects explore his passions for virtuosic drumming, movement and electronics. The Courses The three courses, which form part of the CoMA Contemporary Music Festival Summer School, can be taken all together or combined with other course options such as ensemble playing or composition. Rhythm in Motion Using the music and rhythms of West Africa, South India, Steve Reich, Frederic Rzewski and improvisation this class will explore how a deeper understanding of rhythm can make us stronger and more confident performers. Percussion Ensemble These sessions will rehearse music by pioneering American Composers including: John Cage, Lou Harrison, Steve Reich and Frank Zappa. Deconstructing the Classics Each day we will deconstruct a different solo percussion classic, exploring the composer’s notation, motivation and choice of instrumentation. This class is designed to give you a way into a composer’s language, as well as helping you break down the process of performance preparation.
